A good cocktail shaker is the most essential tool in mixology and the Boston shaker is the most preferred by professionals. Cocktail shakers are used to mix your ingredients properly, add texture, dilution and chill your cocktails to the perfect temperature. They can be used for shaking or stirring a cocktail.

Boston shaker tins are a conical shape so the smaller shaker tin can slot inside the larger shaker tin but will stop about a quarter of the way down to create a seal.

The Boston cocktail shaker provides a larger area for the shaking to take place which allows for a better mix of flavors whilst introducing tiny air bubbles creating texture. Cocktails containing fruit juice will give a slightly frothy appearance whereas egg whites & cream create a foamy top. Dilution and temperature play an important role in creating the perfect cocktail. The temperature of the drink affects the level of dilution as the colder a drink is, the less the drink dilutes. Not enough dilution and your cocktail will be potent, too much dilution your drink becomes weak and watery. Correct dilution enhances your cocktail so the flavors can be fully experienced. Typically, cocktails that contain juice, cream or eggs should be shaken.

Stirring cocktails is best when the ingredients are only alcohol and don’t require layering and for the addition of sparkling ingredients, such as soda.

For easy use:

1. Add the ingredients to the 18oz or mixing shaker tin. If using egg, it is best to perform a dry shake first before adding the ice. Fill the shaker ½ to ¾ full of ice.
2. Put the 28oz shaker tin on top at a slight angle. Tap the top a few times firmly with the heel of your hand to seal the shaker tins together. You should be able to lift the 28oz shaker with one hand slightly without the tins parting.
3. Turn the shaker so the 28oz shaker tin is on the bottom. Place one hand on the bottom and the other securely on top. Shake vigorously for a slow count of 15. Some recipes will require you to shake for longer. Most often the shaking is completed when the outside of the shaker tins become frosty.
4. When finished shaking, place the shaker down with the 28oz shaker tin on the bottom. Hold the bottom shaker tin firmly, use the heel of your other hand to give a sharp whack where the two shaker tins meet. This should break the seal. If it doesn’t release turn the shaker slightly and whack again at a slightly different angle.
5. Remove the 18oz shaker tin and strain your cocktail into the serving vessel using the hawthorn strainer.
